First of the Month!! [November 2009]

First of the Month!  [1, maybe 2 more to go!  Who's gonna take the torch?  ;) ]

A fellow teacher had this quote attached as part of his signature:

"For 3.5 billion years evolution has been taking notes. It tries experiments. It wakes up each morning, does a little mutagenesis, changes a nucleotide here and there, and see how it works. If it is a success, it keeps the notes. In this notebook, we have all the information of the greatest experimental thinker ever." Dr.Eric Lander

I think it odd that although we reject the idea of a God who is the creator and designer of the universe, we're more than willing to accept a personified Evolution.  Perhaps because Evolution doesn't ask us to die to ourselves daily...

***Scalia on Brown v. Board of Education: "I would have dissented" [thanks TJ]
ME:
I do like the way that he remained consistent with what he has been holding to all this time, even though (i'm sure he knew) the answer would be (highly) unpopular.

And, his reasoning for doing so is sound: kings (and tyrants) can do some good things, but that's not to say that backing away from our system of government is a wise idea.

I don't think that what this says is that Scalia thinks that what the court decision was getting at was a bad thing, but rather that changing things is not the court's job: it's the American peoples' (as carried out by law through the Legislative process in ammending the Constitution, in the same way the slavery was ended and in the same way that women's suffrage was recognized).
